Hartlepool Bombardment

On 16 December 1914, Hartlepool was bombarded by the German Navy in the first attack on British soil during World War I - some 130 people were killed.

During a frantic 40 minutes, more than 1,100 shells rained down on the shipbuilding town.
On the same day, German warships also attacked Scarborough and Whitby, in North Yorkshire, bringing civilians unexpectedly on to the front line of battle, but Hartlepool was by far the worst hit.
Many children were having breakfast or heading for school when the attack began.
Fathers who had already started their shifts dashed home to collect their families and a handful of belongings before fleeing on foot out into the County Durham countryside.
As Hartlepool gathered to remember the tragic day BBC Tees where there for a full day of outside Broadcast.

The Headland area, which was home to the Heugh Battery guns, suffered some of the
worst damage with the streets of Moor Terrace (above), Victoria Place and Cliff Terrace being particularly badly hit.
Having the guns at its eastern end meant Moor Terrace was in the firing line of the German shells.
At 8am on the 16th of December 2014 the Battery gun fired again to mark 100 years since the first shell hit the British mainland.

A service of remembrance was help and a new momorial (designed By Steve Wilks) was unvailed to the 130 victims at was was to be the BBC busses final world war 1 event of 2014

Southeasten Trains on BBC Radio Kent

On Monday, October 13th - the first day of South Eastern's new franchise - BBC Radio Kent will have presenters and reporters at train stations in Kent and London,
and during one day of ambitious broadcasting they will be debating how train services might be improved.

They will also scrutinise some of the key pledges made by South Eastern as they take control of our trains for another four years.

These include better customer service, passenger information and a better high-speed service.

BEFORE ALL THAT, they want to know what you think of local train services.

Either look out for the BBC Bus and tell me what you think, or catch our reporter Danny Rhodes, who'll be on the platforms starting at Dartford.

They will gather all your comments, and put your questions to South Eastern's new Managing Director, David Statham, on October the 13th.

Where will the Bus be?

World War 1 - Live Evenets

The WW1 At Home Live Events

Visiting locations across the UK, from May to September 2014
The WW1 At Home Live Events
The WW1 At Home Live Events will reflect on the dramatic impact the war had on families and communities, as well as helping people to explore their own relatives' links to the war.

Discover more about the war

The family-friendly events will include hands-on activities, performances and interactive sessions. The World War One At Home Live Events will feature a mix of eight flagship events, as well as 17 others.
People attending the eight large-scale events in Woolwich, Wolverhampton, Sunderland, Dundee, Bristol, Rhyl, Portrush and Nottingham can visit The Briefing Room for interviews and presentations hosted by BBC stars including actor Larry Lamb. They can volunteer to be put through their paces on an outdoor Parade Ground and, at a number of events, make their own World War One At Home ID Permit to take away in The Recruitment Office. People can also learn about how medicine and communications were transformed during the war, including demonstrations of how carrier pigeons were an invaluable resource for sending messages.
As well as the eight flagship events, the World War One At Home Live Events will visit 17 other sites including The Suffolk Show, Great Yorkshire Show, Weymouth Carnival and Leicester City Festival. In addition to making their own ID Permits and learning about communications, visitors can also have a go at being a war reporter and meet experts from Imperial War Museums to search their families’ connections to the war. They can also hear interviews with BBC personalities and local experts and explore hands on activities in The Pals Tent and meet BBC Local Radio teams as the stations broadcast live from each site.
The World War One At Home Live Events are a partnership between BBC Learning and BBC English Regions. The BBC also continues its partnership with Imperial War Museums (IWM) during the Centenary commemorations and IWM's Lives of the First World War will be an integral part of the tour. 14-18 NOW are also key partners, and visitors to most sites along the BBC World War One At Home Tour will be invited to take part in the nationwide project Letter to An Unknown Soldier, inspired by the famous memorial statue of a soldier at Paddington Station in London. Other partners include: The Royal Signals Museum; Royal Pigeon Racing Association and The Royal College of Pathologists.

Wembley 2014 - FA Trophy Final

Its the Non-league teams day in the sun  The FA Trophy.   This year Cambridge United take on the team from the south coast, Gosport Brough.

In the match itself Man of the match Ryan Donaldson scored twice to help guide Cambridge United to FA Carlsberg Trophy glory at Wembley Stadium.

The former Newcastle trainee hit a second-half double in Sunday’s Final to sink Gosport Borough from the Conference South.
Ryan Bird put the U’s ahead on 38 minutes, Donaldson then netted a nine-minute brace and Luke Berry completed the win from the penalty spot.
It was Cambridge’s first-ever success in this competition and it gave their captain, Ian Miller, the chance to lift The Trophy for the second time in four years, following his former club Darlington’s win in 2011.
BBC Radio Cambridgeshire broadcast for the first time in two weeks from Olympic way as they would be back just a week later to see if Peterborough could make it two trophies going back to Cambridgeshire.
